Sustainability and Ethical Transparency
This tshirt comes from Econscious Apparel. There are many Apparel companies that have 1 or 2 "eco" tshirts but Econscious Apparel's entire line aims to meet some of the highest ethical standards for both workers and the environment. You'll notice that you do not see the Fair Trade certification up there and I wanted to be up front and transparent about that. Fair Trade is our goal--we are on the road but we are not there yet. On the other hand, this tshirt helps TLP to move the needle forward in our goal. Below you will find some of the research I have done on this tshirt and it's life cycle.
Econscious Apparel has 9 different factories and this specific tee goes through their factories in India and Mexico. The factory in India was a family owned business originally started in 1943. Located in the “knitwear capital of India”, they are at the forefront of implementing ecologically sustainable manufacturing systems.
This factory is certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS is a holistic standard that addresses all aspects of handling organic cotton production and is generally considered to be the gold standard of organic cotton production standards because of its scope and detail. Section 3 addresses social components. For more information about GOTS.
It also holds WRAP certification. WRAP is an independent, objective, non-profit team of global social compliance experts dedicated to promoting safe, lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing around the world through certification and education. WRAP’s primary focus is their certification program, which is the largest of its kind in the world mainly focused on the apparel, footwear, and sewn products sectors.
All dying is certified to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
Located in the “knitwear capital of India”, they have the ability to source the softest Organic Cotton and are at the forefront of implementing ecologically sustainable manufacturing systems.
All of the knitting, dying and cutting is done in the USA, and the sewing and finishing is done in Mexico. As a true vertical manufacturer with their own in house knitting and cutting facility in California, the factories are able to tightly control their finished fabric quality.
The Mexico facility consists of 200 trained employees capable of producing approximately 350,000 premium tees a month.
The Road to Fair Trade: While these new tshirts are much more ethical and transparent than our previous line of clothes, it doesn't mean it's perfect and it doesn't mean any of us are off the hook. All of us are probably guilty of taking more from the earth than giving to it and all of us are probably guilty of purchasing items without thinking about the oppression and injustice behind the product.
While it's "better," we promise to keep prioritizing the earth and the human dignity of every person when it comes to our products.
The goal is fair trade. Until then, thank you for your support!!!
